World Robot Conference and Humanoid Games in Beijing

Overview

The 2026 World Robot Conference and the second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing have showcased significant advancements in robotic mobility and commercial utility. Running from August 22–26 at the National Speed Skating Oval, the games featured 2,056 robots from 666 teams representing 16 countries, with approximately 96 to 97 percent of participating teams originating from China.

The competition is structured into 30 sports-based disciplines and 21 scenario-based tasks designed to test commercial viability in environments such as factories, hotels, and fire stations. These tasks evaluate capabilities in industrial assembly, fire suppression, and office work. In the athletic segment, several robots demonstrated fully autonomous movement in 400m, 1,500m, and relay races without remote control. The games also include events such as football, boxing, martial arts, and table tennis.

Athletic milestones include the Tiangong Ultra robot, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, completing a 100-meter sprint in 9.39 seconds, surpassing the human world record of 9.58 seconds set by Usain Bolt in 2009. The Tiangong Ultra also set a new record in the 400-meter race with a time of approximately 38.15 seconds. Additionally, an X-Humanoid model achieved a high jump of 2.88 meters, exceeding the human record of 2.45 meters. Other notable performances include the Honor-developed Lightning robot, which clocked 9.47 seconds in the 100-meter dash and had previously completed a half marathon in Beijing in 50 minutes and 26 seconds.

Despite these breakthroughs, the event continues to highlight technical limitations, including balance issues, difficulties with braking, and failures to start races correctly, leading to robots crashing into padded walls or falling during high-velocity locomotion. Industry experts continue to emphasize the need for lower costs and better generalization capabilities for real-world tasks in homes and factories.
