Yemen‑Iran flight tensions, aid and health crisis

Overview

Since early July 2026 Iranian‑registered Mahan Air flights have repeatedly tried to enter Yemen, prompting condemnation from the internationally‑recognised Yemeni government and the Saudi‑backed coalition. On 17 July Jordan announced that Royal Jordanian Airlines will operate regular commercial flights between Amman and Sana’a to address humanitarian needs, a move welcomed by the Yemeni government, UN envoy Hans Grundberg and Saudi Arabia, while the Houthi militia denounced it as a “trivial bid” and called for an unrestricted airport reopening. The next day Yemen’s temporary capital Aden, via the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Meteorology, issued a circular requiring prior permits for any airline, international organisation or air‑operator before entering Yemeni airspace, declaring itself the sole legitimate civil‑aviation authority. Transport Minister Mohsen Haidera announced that an Iranian Mahan Air Airbus A340‑313 (registration EP‑MMC) departing Tehran for Sana’a was denied entry and forced to land in Oman, reflecting the ongoing “Iranian‑plane crisis”. Earlier, the Yemeni Air Force used re‑conditioned F‑5F Tiger II jets to strike Sana’a International Airport’s runway to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing, indicating a restoration of limited air‑strike capability. The permit regime aims to regulate the limited humanitarian and commercial flights essential for aid delivery amid the protracted conflict. On 24 July the National Cancer Center in Sana’a warned that the Saudi‑led blockade and the continued closure of Sana’a International Airport have devastated cancer treatment. The number of cancer patients has risen from 4,112 in 2015 to 8,250 in 2025, with over 10,000 now requiring care abroad. Essential medicines that need cold‑chain transport are stuck in Djibouti for months, often arriving expired, while key diagnostic and therapeutic equipment remain out of service.
