Zubin Potok mass-grave probe expands

Overview

Excavations in Zubin Potok have confirmed mass graves at Kalludër i Vogël, Jabukë, and a third location, with forensic teams identifying remains believed to belong to at least 23 individuals. These remains are suspected to be linked to the disappearance of a group of 23 intellectuals from the Mitrovica area in April 1999, including prominent surgeon Adem Ademi. Following the discovery, the Kosovo Special Prosecution Office placed three individuals—identified by the initials J. R., M. J., and M. B.—in custody for suspected war crimes against civilian populations. One suspect is believed to have been an active member of the Yugoslav Army during the conflict. During coordinated operations across 12 locations, Kosovo Police also seized an arsenal including 72 weapons, explosives, and Serbian military and police uniforms. After approximately four weeks of work, the physical excavation process has concluded. Agron Limani of the Government Commission on Missing Persons reported that 13 bodies were identified at the first site, four at the second, and six at the third. The recovered remains have been transported to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for DNA analysis. Diplomatic pressure regarding the investigation has intensified. The German Embassy in Kosovo has called on Serbia to cooperate fully with Kosovar institutions to clarify the fate of persons missing from the 1999 war. This follows a demand from Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti for Serbia to release files from the 37th Motorized Brigade of the former Yugoslav Army, which is suspected of involvement in massacres in Drenica and other parts of Kosovo. The German mission emphasized that Serbia should work with its Kosovar counterparts in accordance with the Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement and the previously approved Declaration on Missing Persons.
