2026 Fuji and Suzuka racing events
Overview
Following Honda’s successful return to form at Fuji Speedway in early August, the manufacturer continued its dominance in the GT500 class during the fifth round of the Super GT championship at Suzuka Circuit.
At the Suzuka event, Honda secured a podium sweep in GT500. The No. 16 Honda Prelude, driven by Tomoki Nojiri and Ren Sato, took first place, marking Sato’s first GT victory. The No. 17 car finished second, followed by the No. 8 car in third. This followed a strong qualifying session where the No. 17 Astemo HRC Prelude-GT took pole position and Honda models occupied the top four spots. Notably, the No. 100 Stanley HRC Prelude-GT, the winner of the previous Fuji round, faced technical setbacks including a coolant leak and an engine change, resulting in a five-second post-start penalty.
In the GT300 class at Suzuka, the No. 9 BMW M4 GT3, driven by Yusuke Tomibayashi and Yuta Fujiwara, achieved a pole-to-win victory, marking a first for both the team and the drivers. Other notable GT300 performances included an 18-year-old driver, Kiyoshi Umegaki, finishing second in a Ferrari 296 GT3, and university student Kotaro Niihara taking third in a Mercedes-AMG GT3. Conversely, teams such as Syntium LMcorsa and Subaru R&D Sport struggled with tire issues, finishing 13th and 28th respectively.
