Albania road accident surge continues

Overview

In early July 2026, Albanian authorities responded to several serious road incidents, including a motorbike collision in Çekrez and a crash on the old Fier‑Vlorë highway. Police data from late July showed a sharp rise in fatalities, with 28 deaths and roughly 240 accidents recorded between 1 June and 25 July. Officials attributed this to summer tourism, increased vehicle registrations, and driver fatigue.

The wave of accidents continued through August. Fatalities included Aleks Ukë, a 50‑year‑old man on the Lezhë–Milot road, and 20‑year‑old driver Antonio Mateli. In mid-August, sisters Florie Xhepa and Mirela Hasko died near Delisufaj, Lushnjë, after their vehicle plunged into an irrigation canal from a bridge that lacked protective barriers. On 19 August, a collision in Manza near Durazzo killed three people: 26-year-old Sara Brugnatelli, her 25-year-old husband Kleo Vrioni, and 15-year-old Alvi Muhaxhiri. The couple had been married for only three days.

By the end of August, the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) released data confirming a significant upward trend. In July 2026 alone, 165 accidents resulted in 235 deaths and injuries. For the first seven months of the year, total accidents rose by 10% compared to 2025, totaling 844 incidents and 1,187 casualties. INSTAT identified human error as the primary cause, noting that 90.3% of July’s accidents were due to failures to follow traffic regulations, such as speeding. The highest volume of accidents occurred on Thursdays, with the 25–34 age group being the most affected demographic.
