Bhogapuram Airport inauguration India

Entities: Narendra Modi · N. Chandrababu Naidu · YS Jagan Mohan Reddy · GMR Group · Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport

Overview

The Indian government confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Bhogapuram (Alluri Sitarama Raju) International Airport in Andhra Pradesh on 1 August 2026. After the July 23 meeting in New Delhi where Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu formally invited Modi and highlighted a free‑travel scheme for farmers who provided land, state officials have moved into final‑stage preparations.

A senior team that includes the chief minister’s special aide, private secretary and health‑department officials inspected the terminal, check‑in counters, security checkpoints, VIP lounges, baggage‑handling and runway facilities. They reviewed crowd‑control, traffic‑management, temporary medical stations, water and power supplies, and ensured cultural displays, sound systems and decorative elements meet standards for the public ceremony.

The district collector is coordinating across departments to guarantee smooth execution of Modi’s walkthrough, speeches and the opening ceremony, underscoring the airport’s role as a catalyst for tourism, industry and regional connectivity in north‑Andhra.

During the July 23 meeting, Naidu introduced TDP MP Kalisetti Appalanaidu, whose daily bicycle commute Modi praised. The airport, first conceived under the Telugu Desam Party in 2014 and accelerated by the current coalition, was completed in 31 months at an estimated cost of roughly ₹4.75 billion crore. It features a 3,800‑metre runway, a cargo terminal capacity of 25 000 tonnes, and a design inspired by a flying fish. Initial passenger handling capacity is about 6 million per year, with plans to expand toward 40 million.

From 00:01 hours on 17 August, all scheduled commercial flights will shift from the Visakhapatnam civil enclave to Bhogapuram, and the international code “VTZ” will be transferred to the new facility. Former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy accused the ruling TDP of seeking credit, noting that the YSRCP government managed land acquisition, financing and key work, contributing nearly ₹1,200 crore.
