As the exam date approached, officials confirmed the PND 2026 would be administered on Sunday, September 20, across 806 cities. The assessment, which targets graduating students and graduates seeking public basic education careers, saw 625,954 registered candidates. Participation included 23 state education secretariats and 2,007 municipalities, representing 85.19% of Brazil's federative units and a 33.09% increase in municipal involvement compared to 2025. While most capitals participated, Palmas was the only capital not adopting the PND for teacher selection.

Following the administration of the exam, Inep released the preliminary answer keys and discursive response expectations for the second edition of the PND. The exam covers 21 licensure areas and aims to increase the number of permanent teachers in the public sector. Candidates have a window between October 24 and October 25 to file appeals through the PND system.

Following the appeal period, the PND has resulted in more than 10,000 teachers being selected for public teaching networks. The exam continues to serve as a tool to assist states and municipalities in recruiting effective educators.
