Brazil Zema presidential bid deepens right‑wing feud

Overview

Since late May 2026 former Minas governor Romeu Zema has become a flashpoint in a widening right‑wing dispute with the Bolsonaro family. His campaign links Bolsa Família to men’s education, praises industry, attacks Lula’s spending and defends a R$2.28 million ICMS exemption for his family’s retail chain. The Bolsonaro brothers repeatedly attack him, while Zema denies close ties to Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and praises El Salvador’s security model, describing Brazil’s drug‑related violence as a “civil war.” In early July Zema proposed cancelling welfare benefits for recipients who reject two or three job offers and obliging unemployed beneficiaries to complete elementary, secondary or vocational schooling. He reiterated calls to fully privatise federal state‑owned companies, lower public debt and increase labour‑code flexibility. Zema also accused the Federal Police raid on former President Jair Bolsonaro’s residence of being “extremely suspect” and criticised the Supreme Court’s handling of the Viviane Barci de Moraes contract probe, alleging judicial bias. A new element emerged on 8 July when Zema linked Brazil’s World Cup elimination to alleged undue influence by Francisco Mendes, son of STF minister Gilmar Mendes, accusing him of steering CBF contracts and Neymar’s call‑up. On 9 July centre‑right heavyweight Aécio Neves announced his withdrawal from the 2026 presidential race, with PSDB confirming it will not field a candidate and will stay neutral. Neves cited poll numbers around 2 percent and high rejection rates, left open a possible Senate run in Minas Gerais, and warned the election could become Brazil’s most fratricidal in recent history. The party said it will focus on internal reorganisation, expand its congressional bench and prepare a platform for the 2030 elections, marking a shift after decades of presenting a presidential candidate.
