Overview
In late July 2026 President José Antonio Kast urged fast passage of a Reconstruction Law to speed rebuilding after recent storms, linking it to falling homicide and kidnapping rates. Kast cited crime statistics up to 26 July showing an 18.7 % drop in homicides, a 45 % decline in kidnappings, more than 7,000 fewer violent robberies, an 86.5 % fall in irregular border income and a 60 % rise in drug seizures. The government aims to have the reforms debated in Congress before Christmas, tying the security push to the broader reconstruction effort.
