Democratic value advocacy in Germany
Overview
Civic engagement activities focused on democratic values have been observed across various German locations. In Haltern am See, approximately 200 residents held a vigil following the state election in Saxony-Anhalt under the motto ‘Wir bleiben DemokraTisch’ (We remain democratic). In Salzgitter, approximately 270 citizens gathered for a rally to promote democracy, diversity, and human dignity while opposing racism and right-wing extremism. In the Tirschenreuth district, over 200 participants engaged in an interactive survey organized by the No. way radicalization prevention network.
On October 2, 2026, the second annual ‘Lange Nacht der Demokratie’ (Long Night of Democracy) took place across more than 63 municipalities in Baden-Württemberg. In Weingarten, the event featured a ‘Code for Democracy’ AI hackathon where youths aged 14 and older used artificial intelligence to develop digital prototypes for societal challenges. In Leimen, the ‘Alliance for Democracy, Human Rights, and Diversity’ hosted a program under the motto ‘Together we are strong,’ which included a public discussion titled ‘Have Courage and Stand Up – Church and Democracy’ featuring MP Lars Castellucci, as well as educational sessions for children.
Following the event series, local communities continued democratic discourse. In Krailling, the Kraillinger Library organized a ‘Night of Living Books’ where speakers, including Sabine Bachmair and journalist Zdenek Zofka, shared perspectives on the experiences of women in the former GDR and the importance of active discourse. In Dillingen, Mayor Christian Finkler participated in a Q&A session with approximately 30 students, focusing on community-specific topics such as urban planning and youth facilities.
