Elite winter athletes coping with injury and burnout
Entities: Davide Brignone · Ushuaia · Crans-Montana · Cervinia · Federica Brignone
Overview
By mid‑2026 French biathlete Lubin Amiotte was managing a burnout diagnosis while gradually rebuilding his training schedule with the Nova Biathlon Team. Italian alpine star Federica Brignone continued to battle the lingering effects of a tibia‑fibula fracture and multiple knee injuries first suffered in late‑2024. Fifteen months after the accident she remained limited to low‑impact work – cycling, swimming and gym sessions – and could not run or bear full weight. In July she reported that she would attempt to ski again in early August and hoped to join Italy’s Ushuaia camp in September, warning that another season of setbacks could force her out of the 2026‑27 calendar and she had already ruled out the 2030 Winter Olympics.
Later that month Brignone disclosed her post‑career aspirations: she hopes to become a mother after retiring and envisions traveling the world surfing, from San Salvador to the Maldives, while keeping her personal relationship private. She also compared her public profile to fellow Italian star Jannik Sinner, noting the contrast in travel style.
On 30 July Brignone returned to on‑snow training on the Cervinia glacier, her first piste sessions in 151 days, accompanied by her brother and coach Davide. She plans a month‑long training stint in Ushuaia at the end of August to assess her left knee and prepare for the upcoming World Cup circuit and the February World Championships in Crans‑Montana.
