Ferrari Schumacher tribute and technical upgrades at Monza

Overview

Ferrari is preparing a major tribute to seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher during the upcoming Italian Grand Prix at Monza, scheduled for September 4 to September 6, 2026. The celebration marks the 30th anniversary of Schumacher’s first season with the Scuderia in 1996 and the 20th anniversary of his final victory at the circuit in 2006. To honor the legend, drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will wear special racing suits and team kits featuring Schumacher’s personal ‘M S’ logo and seven white stars. The team has unveiled a special SF-26 car livery, referred to as the ‘Sunday Rituals’ design, inspired by the 1996 F310. This livery features predominantly red bodywork, white wings, black detailing, and gold accents on the wheels, with seven stars displayed on the nose or front wing.

As part of the ‘Sunday Rituals’ event, historical demonstration laps have commenced. Rubens Barrichello, Schumacher’s former teammate, drove the championship-winning F2002 at the Monza Circuit. Barrichello expressed emotion regarding the experience, noting the car’s handling and intense G-forces. Following Barrichello, four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel also returned to the Monza circuit to pilot the F2002. Vettel completed several laps and performed donuts for the Tifosi, describing the experience as ‘deeply moving’. He noted that while the car was a beautiful piece of machinery, it felt significantly more important because it belonged to Schumacher. Vettel, who retired from F1 at the end of 2022, expressed that he was “mixed up in feelings,” adding, “He’s not here today but I felt him a lot in these laps.” Despite the nostalgia of the paddock, Vettel reaffirmed his retirement, stating he has no intention of returning as a driver, test driver, or simulator specialist at this time.
