German television programming and crime series updates
Overview
German television networks continue to roll out diverse programming schedules across quiz, drama, and biographical genres. Quiz programming remains a focal point; Das Erste scheduled a three-hour ‘Wer weiß dennso? XXL’ special for October 3, featuring celebrity guests and a 50,000 euro charity prize.
Significant updates are occurring within long-running crime franchises. The cult ARD series ‘Liebling Kreuzberg’ is celebrating its 40th anniversary with two new feature-length films, ‘Ein Meisterstück’ and ‘Auf Augenhöhe’, scheduled for release in mid-October following a digital release on October 14. The series is being continued through ‘Kanzlei Liebling Kreuzberg’.
The ‘Tatort’ series is undergoing major transitions in multiple regions. In Kiel, a new team led by Mila Sahin (Almila Bagriacik) and supported by Elli Krieger (Karoline Schuch) debuted in a two-part special, ‘Unter Freunden’ and ‘Unter Feinden’, directed by Lars Kraume. Investigating corruption and organized crime within a high-tech company, the episodes drew over seven million viewers, though audience reactions were mixed regarding pacing and plot density.
In the Franken region, the franchise is introducing a new duo in Nuremberg. Rosalie Thomass joins Fabian Hinrichs’ Felix Voss as Chief Inspector Emilia ‘Emmy’ Rathgeber, marking a new era for the production following the departure of Dagmar Manzel. Their debut episode, ‘Gottesgarten’, aired on ARD on October 25, 2026. The plot involves the murder of Elias Schaller, a performer found in a Nuremberg hourly hotel, exploring themes of sexual abuse and historical trauma. Critics have noted a successful dynamic between the new leads. Thomass has also used the platform to address industry issues, specifically criticizing the “lack of representation for women over 40 in film” and the pressures regarding body image on sets.
