Ghana Football Association youth development expansion

Overview

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) continues to expand its youth development framework, building on the launch of the U19 Premier League and the ongoing 2026/27 Colts football season.

As part of these grassroots efforts, the sixth KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U-17 Colts Championship is being held at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, alongside other regional venues. The tournament features 12 teams, including ten regional sides and two GFA Elite Academy teams from Bolgatanga and Kumasi. To support these initiatives, the KGL Foundation has committed $200,000 to the GFA to fund juvenile football over the next two years, providing kits, equipment, and educational scholarships.

As the competition progresses under the GFA’s Talent Development Scheme (TDS), Prempeh Elite Academy has maintained a perfect record. During Matchday Three, the academy secured a 5-0 victory over the Volta Region, with goals scored by Thomas Asante, Yusuf Sabits, and Michael Brebi. Other recent results include the Eastern Region defeating defending champions Ashanti Region 4-0, and the Western Region moving to the top of Group B following a 3-1 win against the Upper West Region.

A high-stakes Group A encounter is scheduled for October 7 between the undefeated Prempeh Elite Academy and second-placed Greater Accra. The tournament remains a central component of the GFA’s efforts to identify and nurture emerging talent from Ghana's ten Regional Football Associations and GFA Elite Academies.
