Greek astronaut Adrianos Golemis space mission

Overview

Adrianos Golemis, an ESA flight surgeon, has been announced as the first Greek astronaut to travel to space. He is scheduled to serve as a mission specialist for the RAM-6 (also referred to as PAM-6) mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in the second half of 2027.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis officially announced Golemis’s selection during the International Space Summit in Paris, where he was presented alongside French President Emmanuel Macron. The mission is described as an initiative led by France and Germany to strengthen the European presence within the space industry. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacson noted that as an Artemis Accords partner, Greece is contributing to a “sustainable low Earth orbit economy.”

The mission is a collaboration involving the private company Vast, the European Space Agency (ESA), and NASA, utilizing a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft. This mission represents the first private astronaut mission awarded by NASA to the company Vast. Golemis will serve alongside mission commander Thomas Pesquet of France and pilot Aleš Svoboda of the Czech Republic.

The mission aims to conduct research experiments by Greek universities and companies, focusing on the effects of microgravity on the human body to improve medical treatments on Earth. This milestone follows previous discussions regarding a national space program and Greece's existing satellite programs. Golemis will undergo training in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
