Greek athletes compete at European Championships

Following domestic championships in July 2026, Greek athletes continued their campaign at the European Championships in swimming and athletics.

In swimming, Apostolos Christou successfully defended his European title in the 100m backstroke in Paris, winning gold with a time of 52.27 seconds. Meanwhile, Anna Dountounaki finished fourth in the women’s 100m butterfly (57.10 seconds), and Georgia Damasioti placed eighth (57.72 seconds). Overall, Greece placed eighth in the combined medal standings of the aquatic championships.

In athletics, Miltos Tentoglou secured his fourth consecutive European title in the long jump with a best jump of 8.44m. In Birmingham, pole vaulter Emmanouil Karalis earned a silver medal after clearing 6.00 meters. In the women’s marathon race walk, 42-year-old Antigoni Dritsopioti set a new Greek national record with a time of 3:22:16 to finish fourth, despite recovering from a rib fracture. Panagiota Chinopoulou finished fifth in the same event.

Other results were mixed: Anastasia Dragomirova placed second in the heptathlon shot put but withdrew from the 200m due to a foot injury, leaving her in 14th place. In the long jump, Natalia Besi failed to register a valid distance, while Adriana Goga finished 24th.
