Greek productions of Lorca's Blood Wedding

Entities: Federico García Lorca · Patras · Dionysis Tsakni · Thessalian Theater · Kostas Tsianos

Overview

In June 2026 Greece hosted two separate adaptations of Federico García Lorca’s tragedy “Blood Wedding.” The first, reported on 14 June, was a European film co‑production titled “Γέρμα,” shot on Evia and directed by Lara Izaguirre with Greek company Neda Film and Basque Gariza Films. Financing came from Greek cultural programmes, Eurimages and the municipality, and the director emphasized a modern, feminist reading of the play.

A stage production was announced on 28 June by the Thessalian Theatre for its 50‑year anniversary. Directed by Kostas Tsianos with music by Dionysis Tsakni, it premiered on 1 July at the B Ancient Theatre of Larissa and ran through early July, with a second showing on 15 September at the Alkazar Garden Theatre. The cast, including Niki Pallikaráki and others, toured widely, reaching towns such as Alexandroupoli, Xanthi, Komotini, Kilkis, Chalkida, Kavala, Patras, Turbina, Ioannina, as well as Tyrnavos, Omoios and Elassona.

The tour continued on 27 July with a performance in Patras at the Summer Municipal Theatre as part of the International Festival of Patras, followed by shows in Tyrnavos (29 July), Omoios (30 July) and Elassona (2 August). Critics praised the visual design by Georgios Ziakas, choreography and the blend of Andalusian folk elements with Greek tragedy, underscoring the production’s regional impact and its commemoration of Lorca’s 90th death anniversary.
