Hyundai Staria powertrain and market expansion

Overview

Hyundai is expanding the powertrain options and market availability of its Staria vehicle lineup, focusing on electrification and hybrid technology. In Europe, the company launched the Staria Electric MPV, an all-electric model designed to compete with existing electric vans. The European rollout includes three versions—Trend, Prime, and Calligraphy—offering various seating configurations and premium features. Furthering this European expansion, Hyundai has re-entered the German commercial vehicle market with the launch of the electric Staria Cargo. This N1-class vehicle utilizes an 800-volt architecture and an 84-kWh battery, capable of charging from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 20 minutes. It offers a standard range of 450 kilometers and features an optional Vehicle-to-Load function. The cargo version specifically supports a payload of up to 1,102 kg and can accommodate three Euro pallets. Building on this electric foundation, Hyundai unveiled the Staria Camper Concept at the CMT exhibition in Stuttgart. This concept vehicle is designed for greater independence through integrated solar technology, featuring a pop-up roof equipped with a 520-watt solar panel. While the standard electric van has a certified range of approximately 430km, the camper’s additional equipment is expected to reduce the estimated WLTP range to roughly 400km. Hyundai is currently collecting feedback to determine if the project will move to mass production. Expansion has also reached Taiwan, where Hyundai has officially launched an updated Staria featuring a 1.6T-GDi TMED turbo hybrid powertrain. This system, which delivers a combined output of 225ps and 37.4kgm of torque, complements the existing 2.2L diesel engine. The hybrid model is designed to operate without the restrictions faced by diesel vehicles in certain urban air quality control zones. Since pre-orders opened in September, the model has secured over 500 orders, with hybrid variants accounting for 80% of that volume.
