India NEET medical counseling reforms and legal proceedings

Overview

The Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) continues to manage medical entrance counseling for 2025 and 2026. For NEET SS 2025, the MCC previously released provisional Round 2 seat allotment results with seat matrix expansions and corrections. Regarding undergraduate admissions, NEET UG 2026 Round 1 seat allotment results for MBBS and BDS were published on August 21, 2026. In Tamil Nadu, the Directorate of Medical Education released Round 1 seat allotment results for MBBS and BDS under Government and Management quotas on August 27. Candidates had until September 5, 2026, to complete admission formalities. On September 9, 2026, the Directorate released the Round 2 seat matrix for MBBS and BDS to assist with the choice-filling process. The deadline for Round 2 choice filling and locking is set for September 13, 2026, with allotment results expected on September 15. As of September 1, 2026, the MCC opened registration and choice filling for Round 2 of the NEET UG 2026 counseling, effective September 3. The MCC has also released national seat allotment results for the NEET UG 2026 cycle to allocate seats across various medical and dental colleges in India. In Puducherry, the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) released its Round 1 Draft Allotment List for UG NEET-based courses. Of the 903 available seats in MBBS, BDS, and BAMS, 882 candidates have been allotted seats. Four seats remain withheld pending a Writ Appeal before the Madras High Court. Due to the extended counseling schedule, the start of the MBBS 2026-27 academic session—originally slated for September 8—may be deferred by approximately one week, with an expected start around September 15, 2026. On September 11, 2026, the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) and the MCC released Round 2 provisional seat allotment results.
