Indonesian Car Free Day urban initiatives

Overview

Indonesian local governments are implementing Car Free Day (CFD) initiatives to promote public health and stimulate regional economies through the support of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

In Medan Belawan, the first CFD was inaugurated by Mayor Rico Waas on August 2, 2026. By late August, the Jalan Sumatera CFD attracted over 6,000 participants and 160 MSMEs. In Jakarta, Governor Pramono Anung is reviewing a proposal from the Ministry of Environment to expand CFD to include both Saturdays and Sundays. To evaluate the impact on business operations, officials plan to hold focus group discussions with experts and stakeholders. The Committee for the Elimination of Leaded Gasoline (KPBB) supports the expansion, noting it serves as a tool for ‘urban transportation transformation’ to reduce pollution and congestion.

On October 11, 2026, Jakarta CFD on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman and Jalan MH Thamrin concluded at 10:00 WIB, as officials determined the route was not required for the state visit of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi until 09:30 WIB. Later, on October 25, 2026, the CFD was relocated to Jalan Sultan Iskandar Muda in South Jakarta to accommodate the Jakarta Running Festival.
