Indonesian Car Free Day urban initiatives
Overview
Indonesian local governments are implementing Car Free Day (CFD) initiatives to promote public health and stimulate regional economies through the support of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
In Medan Belawan, the first CFD was inaugurated by Mayor Rico Waas on August 2, 2026. The event, which included health services and bazaars, was intended to ensure that “happiness and health must reach all corners of Medan.” By late August, initiatives expanded in Medan, where the Jalan Sumatera CFD attracted over 6,000 participants and 160 MSMEs, and in Mojokerto Regency via the Peken Wilwatikta CFD.
In early September 2026, the program continued to expand across other regions. The Bogor city government officially resumed weekend CFD activities on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman to provide safe public spaces for exercise and social interaction. Meanwhile, in South Tangerang, Mayor Benyamin Davnie has proposed a “Car Free Night” (CFN) concept to further boost tourism and the local economy. While the CFN proposal remains under discussion regarding traffic management, existing monthly CFD events in BSD, Serpong, already support approximately 250 MSMEs through free bazaar participation.
