Italian railway service disruptions and commuter demands

Overview

Following the summer of 2026, which saw significant railway interruptions due to infrastructure upgrades, rockfalls on the Amalfi Coast, and power failures, tensions between commuters and transport authorities escalated. In September, commuter committees launched protests against EAV management, alleging a “glaring injustice” regarding the distribution of resources across the Circumvesuviana network. Protesters claimed the service operated at “two different speeds,” noting that while the Naples-Sorrento line received investments, inland lines serving Baiano, Sarno, Poggiomarino, and San Giorgio suffered from persistent delays.

In response, the Campania Region and EAV announced an enhancement plan for the Vesuvian rail lines. Starting October 17, a new schedule will implement a regular 30-minute frequency, replacing the previous 36-minute intervals. The upgrade includes adding 10 new Etr 300 trains to the fleet, increasing total service capacity to 280 daily trips and approximately 171,988 seats per day. Key routes benefiting include Napoli–Sorrento, Napoli–Torre Annunziata, and connections to Poggiomarino and Sarno. Campania President Roberto Fico stated the initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure efficient and safe public mobility, which also includes doubling bus frequencies in coastal areas to every 15 minutes.

However, the Comitato Pendolari Vesuviani has criticized the new scheduling, describing the service as “deeply inconsistent.” While the plan adds stops in Ercolano, Portici, San Giorgio, and Torre del Greco on the Sorrento route, critics noted that services on the Sarno and Poggiomarino lines end before 20:00. Furthermore, the Baiano line continues to lack a direct connection to Naples, with service limited to Volla between 07:00 and 19:00, a situation described as inefficient for students and workers.
