Italian space and aerospace sector development

Overview

Italy continues to expand its involvement in the space sector through industrial, educational, and scientific initiatives. The sector currently ranks seventh in active satellites and sixth in launches since 2019, generating approximately eight billion euros in production and employing over 23,000 people.

Regional industrial development remains a priority. In Lazio, the regional government and the Italian Space Agency (ASI) have signed a framework agreement in Rome to strengthen the regional aerospace supply chain and promote technological innovation. To support this, the Lazio Region announced 115 million euros in funding, including two calls for proposals in collaboration with Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. These funds target strategic sectors such as aerospace, artificial intelligence, and pharmaceuticals, as well as the STEP program for European strategic technologies.

Public engagement and technological showcases are also increasing. At the BEX international aerospace salon in Rimini, the Brindisi-based research center CETMA showcased advanced technologies, including virtual reality simulators designed to simulate life aboard the International Space Station and zero gravity environments. CETMA also presented wearable technology featuring sensors to monitor vital signs such as EEG, ECG, blood oxygen saturation, and body temperature.

Additionally, the “Corsa allo Spazio” exhibition in Brugherio features scale models of rockets, spacecraft, probes, and aircraft to educate the public on space missions. International efforts continue through the ‘Rendezvous Italy’ program and the International Italo-Latin American Organization (IILA), which uses space research and scientific diplomacy to address global challenges in Latin America, such as natural disaster prediction and sustainable development.
