Japanese remake of ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’
Overview
Japanese television networks Kansai TV and Fuji TV have released a remake of the South Korean drama ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’, titled ‘Minamida Min wa Tensai-gata’ (also referred to as ‘Minamida Min is a Genius’, ‘Minami Nanata Lawyer is a Genius’, or ‘Minami Nanata: The Genius Lawyer’). The series premiered on October 19, 2026, with episodes scheduled for global streaming on Netflix following their Japanese broadcast.
Mana Ashida stars as Minamida Min (also referred to as Minami Nanata), a brilliant rookie lawyer with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who graduated at the top of her class from the University of Tokyo. Working at the Hirokawa Howard law firm, she utilizes a unique perspective and exceptional memory to tackle complex legal cases while navigating social prejudice. To prepare for the role, Ashida consulted specialists and studied ASD, describing the project as a “big challenge” regarding the portrayal of emotional expression and eye contact. Co-star Fumiya Takahashi, who plays Minato Funai, a kind-hearted colleague and romantic interest, praised Ashida as a “genius of effort” for her meticulous preparation.
The cast also includes Akihiro Tsunoda as Makoto Minamida, the protagonist’s devoted father. Following the premiere, the first episode achieved a 7.4% viewership rating in the Kanto region. While the production replaced the original’s revolving doors with escalators to depict sensory challenges, a scene involving a rhythmic, synchronized greeting between the protagonist and her best friend drew online comparisons to a controversial ritual from a previous Fuji TV production, despite being a faithful recreation of the original Korean source material. The series is currently broadcasting on Monday nights.
