KPSC recruitment scam investigation and political fallout

Overview

The investigation into the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) recruitment scam has expanded significantly. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested the suspended KPSC chairman, Shivashankarappa S Sahukar, and KPSC member BV Geetha under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). These arrests followed raids at Sahukar’s residence, where officials seized digital devices and documents related to recruitment processes and financial transactions. The agency cited non-cooperation during questioning as a reason for the arrests.

This brings the total number of arrests in the probe to four, following the previous detention of middleman Basavaraj Kannale and former KPSC Controller of Examinations, IAS officer Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar. The investigation focuses on the recruitment of 400 veterinary officers, alleging that Gangwar leaked examination papers to Kannale.

A Bengaluru court has remanded Sahukar and Geetha to ED custody, with orders to produce them in open court. Financial investigations suggest Kannale collected between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 90 lakh per post. Evidence indicates a direct cash payment of Rs 1.3 crore was made to Gangwar, which was allegedly used to fund luxury items.

The case has sparked a political row, with BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra accusing the Congress-led state government of double standards, alleging the exam—held on January 8 and 9 for approximately 1,400 candidates—was leaked on January 7. The matter was reportedly brought to light by whistleblower S Manjunath. The investigation involves the ED, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and a High Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT).
