New York Knicks post-championship developments

Overview

Following the New York Knicks’ 2026 NBA championship victory, which ended a 53-year title drought, the team faces a more competitive Eastern Conference. Specifically, the Philadelphia 76ers have bolstered their roster with the additions of Jaylen Brown and LeBron James. Knicks star Jalen Brunson, the NBA Finals MVP, has expanded his media presence. On September 26, Brunson hosted the season 52 premiere of ‘Saturday Night Live’ with KATSEYE as the musical guest. He was the first Knicks player to host the program. During his opening monologue, teammates Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Karl-Anthony Towns joined him for a comedic Q&A regarding his championship run and contract negotiations. While the episode received praise for its energy, some critics offered mixed reviews regarding Brunson’s comedic delivery and specific sketches, such as a support group segment that drew viewer criticism. Reflecting on the hosting experience, Brunson noted that while he felt “significant anxiety” leading up to the episode, he found the process “highly enjoyable.” He emphasized the intense preparation required, including long hours at the studio, and identified a ‘High School Musical’ spoof as his favorite sketch. Following the initial broadcast, ‘Saturday Night Live’ aired a repeat of the Brunson premiere on October 17, 2026. This scheduled rerun followed a controversial episode hosted by Shane Gillis and occurred during a short hiatus before new episodes return on October 31. As the team moves forward, Brunson remains a focal point of NBA discourse. Analyst Kendrick Perkins has criticized Brunson’s omission from the NBA’s Top 5 players list, arguing his playoff performance justifies ranking him ahead of Luka Doncic. Internally, roster dynamics continue to evolve; Tyler Kolek has expressed a desire to emulate Brunson’s midrange and finishing abilities as he works to secure his role within the championship-minded organization.
