Sleep deprivation and chronic fatigue in Poland
Overview
Research indicates a significant sleep deficit among young Poles aged 18–35. A report by UCE RESEARCH and ePsycholodzy.pl found that one-third of this demographic sleeps an average of six hours or less per night, with only 23.4% achieving the recommended seven to nine hours. Experts have warned that this lack of sleep poses serious health risks, including increased chances of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and premature death. Subsequent analysis by ePsycholodzy.pl expanded on these findings by quantifying the economic impact of this trend. Sleep deprivation among young workers is estimated to cost Polish employers approximately 8.73 billion PLN annually, driven by an estimated 17.5 million lost working days. The report noted that 29.9% of young men and 35.6% of young women sleep less than six hours per night, leading to reduced concentration and increased risks of workplace errors and accidents. A report by PZU Zdrowie, titled ‘Epidemia zmęczenia. Polacy nie mają czasu na zdrowie’, suggests these issues may be widespread across the population. The study found that nearly 80% of Poles experienced chronic fatigue at least occasionally in the three months preceding the research, with 28% reporting frequent fatigue. Demographic trends show that frequent fatigue is more prevalent among younger groups, affecting 35% of those aged 18–24 and 31% of those aged 25–29, compared to 22% of those aged 60 and older. Additionally, while 64% of respondents rated their physical health as good or very good, mental wellbeing appears lower among the youth, with only 42% of those aged 18–24 reporting positive mental wellbeing. Recent data from the PZU Zdrowie study further specifies that only 7% of the population sleeps more than eight hours daily, and 25% of respondents sleep fewer than six hours per night.
