Smoking cessation through Turkish health centers
Overview
Reports from various Turkish provinces indicate that citizens are successfully overcoming long-term tobacco addictions by utilizing medical services at local Healthy Life Centers.
Individual cases highlight diverse motivations and outcomes. In Van, Hüsnü Özlü, a 52-year-old father of five, ended a 40-year habit, noting improved physical activity and better family dynamics as children no longer react negatively to the smell of smoke. In Kırşehir, Muhittin Özdemir, an ambulance driver, quit after 35 years using patch therapy at the Nasuhdede Healthy Life Center, reporting an improved ability to walk for up to 50 minutes daily. Demet Karahan also successfully ceased a 20-year habit at the same center.
In Trabzon, Zeki Yılmaz ended a 37-year addiction through a 25-day medication course at the Ortahisar Health Directorate. Motivated by a family history of lung cancer, Yılmaz reported improved sleep and energy levels.
In Konya, Cemal Dikici reported that quitting a 20-year habit provided better sleep, stamina, and financial advantages, allowing him to pay housing cooperative dues. His brother, Kadir Dikici, President of the Konya Branch of the Association for Fighting Smoking in Turkey, noted the family now participates in public health promotion.
Healthcare professionals are also seeing success. In Hatay, Anesthesia Technician Anıl Kabadayı used the Smoking Cessation Clinic to end an 11-year habit, restoring his sense of taste and smell.
Turkey continues to expand specialized services, including Ankara’s Etlik City Hospital, which focuses on psychological support for pregnant women, and Kocaköy State Hospital in Diyarbakır, which offers comprehensive behavioral and pharmacological treatments.
