Spanish right-wing parties surpass 50% in latest polls
Overview
By early September 2026, the political landscape in Spain underwent a significant shift as right-wing parties gained unprecedented momentum. A 40dB poll conducted for El País and Cadena SER indicates that the center-right Partido Popular (PP) and the right-wing Vox party have combined to surpass 50% of voting intentions for the first time, reaching a total of 50.2%. The PP holds 32.4% of the vote, while Vox has risen to 17.8%.
In contrast, the governing Socialist Party (PSOE) under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has continued its decline. The combined left-wing bloc, including the PSOE and Sumar, stands at approximately 36.1%. This downward trend follows earlier projections and is linked to ongoing legal proceedings involving the Prime Minister’s wife and former minister José Luis Ábalos.
The polling results coincide with heightened political tension regarding the migration crisis in Ceuta. Public sentiment remains heavily critical of the government’s response to the influx of approximately 72,000 migrants in late July. According to the survey, 89% of Spaniards hold the Moroccan government responsible for the crisis, while 72% attribute significant responsibility to the Spanish government. Approximately 62.7% of respondents rated Prime Minister Sánchez’s management of the situation as ‘bad’ or ‘very bad.’ Furthermore, there is strong public support for increased border security, with 82% of respondents backing expanded fencing and surveillance. Vox is increasingly viewed as a key player in this issue, with 27% of respondents seeing it as the party best equipped to handle immigration.
