Tech and AI initiatives in Romania and Moldova

Overview

Technology and educational initiatives focusing on artificial intelligence and software development are expanding across Romania and Moldova.

In Romania, major tech events continue to address the practical and societal implications of AI. The IQ Digital Summit in Bucharest, held October 15, 2026, featured Mo Gawdat to explore whether AI represents humanity’s ‘greatest achievement or error,’ with sessions divided between broad societal trends and practical corporate integration. Concurrently, Big Data Week Bucharest addressed the transition from AI experimentation to real-world production, focusing on data engineering, governance, and cost-efficiency.

Regulatory discussions have also intensified. A conference organized by the University of Bucharest Faculty of Law and the European Commission Representation in Romania focused on the ‘Technological Revolution and Artificial Intelligence Regulation.’ Over 120 participants discussed the necessity of a predictable regulatory framework, emphasizing that the AI Act must align with corporate realities and institutional capacity. Experts noted that Romania has the necessary research talent, provided there is sufficient infrastructure and data access.

Educational integration is advancing through new formal and informal channels. A new AI usage guide, developed via a PNRR project and coordinated by Cătălin Glava, has been introduced for Romanian schools. Designed as a recommended didactic auxiliary to promote AI literacy, it suggests avoiding AI for preschool and primary students, while allowing guided use in middle school and significant, declared use in high school. This complements existing efforts like Bucharest’s Little London Theoretical High School pilot and the AIprenor program.

In Moldova and Romania, specialized workshops are also emerging. A Chișinău workshop scheduled for October 10–11 aims to train young activists on using AI to build social movements and manage digital risks. Additionally, the Politehnica University of Timișoara hosted a meeting on September 25, 2026, regarding machine learning applications in healthcare and biological sciences.
