Overview

The construction of the Terme Wellovar geothermal spa complex in Bjelovar, Croatia, is entering its final stages. Valued at approximately €41.5 to €42 million, the project is considered the largest investment in the city’s history. Mayor Dario Hrebak has described the development as a “project of a generation.”

The facility, located in Veliki Korenov, will feature ten indoor and outdoor pools heated by geothermal water sourced from a depth of 500 meters. The complex is designed to be largely energy-independent by utilizing solar collectors and geothermal water for heating, thereby avoiding the need for gas installations. Funding includes €17 million from Croatia’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan and European funds, with the remaining costs covered by municipal loans.

As of August 2026, the project reached a milestone with the filling of its Olympic-sized swimming pool. By September 2026, Mayor Hrebak announced that the thermal well would be named ‘Ivičino vrelo’ to honor the late Ivica Markovinović, a former municipal official. Hrebak noted that the project’s origins trace back to a 2017 discussion with Markovinović, who suggested constructing a thermal spa rather than a standard heated pool to better manage costs. Following successful drilling that confirmed water quality, the project has moved toward its final opening.
