Turkey expands biological pest control
Overview
Throughout July 2026, Turkish authorities broadened integrated pest-management actions across the west and south. After releasing 10,000 beneficial insects into Pamukkale’s pomegranate orchards on 4 July, field teams inspected tomato, cotton, and sunflower crops in Aydın’s Köşk district. The Ege Tobacco Exporters' Association extended its pesticide-packaging recycling network, while the Biyotop Project in Kozan released parasitic insects against citrus whitefly.
Local campaigns continued in Koçarlı and Hatay, and Ankara launched a “Smart Insect” pilot on 16 July to protect tomatoes. By early August, the programme reached Manisa, where technicians tracked olive-fly and Mediterranean fruit-fly populations. Mass-releases of Tamarixia radiata, Hyperaspis trifurcata, and Cryptolaemus montrouzieri achieved 85–90% suppression of target pests, while PCR testing confirmed the absence of citrus greening disease.
In early August, the Manisa Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry maintained regular inspections in the Akhisar and Gördes districts, using phenological observations and weekly trap catches to monitor pest density. Simultaneously, the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality expanded biological control efforts by distributing predator and parasitoid species to farmers across 800 decares of coastal land. This initiative, managed by the Department of Agricultural Services, targets pomegranate and citrus production to combat pests like mealybugs and whiteflies while reducing chemical pesticide reliance to protect soil, water, and export market standards.
