Turkey high-speed rail development

Overview

Turkey’s high-speed rail infrastructure has seen significant milestones in both passenger usage and technological development.

The Ankara-Konya high-speed line reached a milestone of 22.8 million passengers since its 2011 inauguration. Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu noted that the route reduced travel time between the two cities from over 10 hours to under 2 hours.

In parallel, Turkey has advanced its domestic rail technology. A domestically produced electric high-speed train developed by TÜRASAŞ has reached a testing speed of 250 km/h on the Gebze-Eskişehir and Eskişehir-Polatlı routes. While the train has an operational speed of 225 km/h, it is undergoing dynamic safety tests to verify performance and technical compatibility before official commissioning.

The 8-car aluminum-bodied train has a capacity of 577 passengers and features advanced systems, including automatic train stopping, climate control, fire alarms, and passenger information systems. Critical components, specifically the Traction System and the Train Control and Management System, were designed and manufactured domestically in collaboration with ASELSAN.

Regarding broader infrastructure, Minister Uraloğlu noted that the Ankara-İzmir high-speed train project aims to reduce travel time between those cities to 3.5 hours upon completion.
