Turkey advances domestic high-speed rail production

Overview

Turkey’s high-speed rail infrastructure continues to expand through both domestic technological development and new network planning.

Following successful dynamic safety tests where the first TÜRASAŞ-developed electric train reached speeds of 250 km/h, the country has officially entered the serial production phase for its first domestic high-speed train. Production of the second “Milli Hızlı Tren” set has commenced. These 8-car aluminum-bodied trains have a capacity of 577 passengers and feature critical components, such as the Traction System and the Train Control and Management System, designed in collaboration with ASELSAN.

The government intends to produce 14 train sets over two years, with seven sets scheduled for 2027 and seven for 2028. To facilitate this, a new 18,000-square-meter high-speed train factory in Sakarya is nearing completion, with construction currently at 90 percent. Once operational, the facility is expected to produce one high-speed train per month, integrating production, assembly, and testing in a single location.

In terms of network expansion, studies have been completed for a new 541-kilometer high-speed railway project. This planned route aims to connect Kayseri, Nevşehir, Aksaray, Konya, and Antalya, linking the Cappadocia region to the Mediterranean coast. Designed for speeds of 200 km/h, the double-track, electrified line is intended to serve both passenger and freight transport, establishing a new corridor for logistics.

Earlier milestones include the Ankara-Konya line reaching 22.8 million passengers since 2011, and the ongoing Ankara-İzmir project, which aims to reduce travel time to 3.5 hours.
