Turkey's 2026 European sports championships

Overview

In August 2026, Turkey expanded its presence at European sport. The Turkish Athletics Federation sent a record 50-member team (31 men and 19 women) to the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham (10-16 August), surpassing the previous record of 46 athletes set in 2016. This participation raised the nation's historic medal tally to 33 (12 gold, 10 silver, 11 bronze).

Simultaneously, Istanbul hosted the European Senior Modern Pentathlon Championships (3-9 August) at Burhan Felek, marking the first time Turkey has hosted this specific senior European event. The competition featured 153 athletes from 22 nations. Early in the tournament, Turkish competitors İlke Özyüksel Mihrioğlu and Sıdal Aslan advanced to the women's semifinals.

On 7 August, İlke Özyüksel Mihrioğlu became the first Turkish athlete to win a European title in modern pentathlon, securing the gold medal following performances in fencing, obstacle course, swimming, and laser run. In the women's final, Anastasiya Arol of Belarus took silver and Blanka Guzi of Hungary took bronze.

Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak described Mihrioğlu as a “legendary name for modern pentathlon in Turkey.” Reflecting on her 21-year career, Mihrioğlu attributed her success to mental resilience and positive internal dialogue, particularly after facing difficulties during the fencing portion. Following her victory, she began preparing for the Senior World Championships in China.

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Hamza Yerlikaya attended the event and expressed confidence that Turkish pentathletes can win a medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The championships also saw significant success for the Hungarian national team, which secured three gold, two silver, and one bronze medal.
