Water supply disruptions and infrastructure failures in MG

Overview

In early July 2026, water service in Itabira was halted as Vale carried out maintenance on the local supply system. By the end of the month, instability in the artesian well serving the Barro Branco community caused temporary interruptions for several Itabira neighborhoods, including Areias, Chapada, and Boa Esperança. Simultaneously, the utility Cemig scheduled power-network maintenance in Belo Horizonte, which was expected to cause intermittent water and power outages in six districts on August 2. By late August, water supply issues persisted in different regions. In Belo Horizonte, residents in the Buritis neighborhood reported shortages lasting several days due to low pressure in the hydraulic network. Copasa, the Minas Gerais Sanitation Company, attributed these fluctuations to operational adjustments following a broken water main in the Nova Granada neighborhood. Additionally, the São Jorge district faced shortages exacerbated by the approaching dry season. On August 27, further disruptions were reported in Itabira after a power failure caused the temporary halt of the Chapada Water Treatment Plant. By August 30, disruptions intensified in Belo Horizonte and its metropolitan region. Copasa announced that maintenance on the Rio Manso Water Supply System necessitated a shutdown affecting over a thousand neighborhoods. This included pump replacements in Pedro Leopoldo, drainage improvements in Contagem, and electrical upgrades. The situation was further complicated by a major water main rupture in the Barreiro region, which caused flooding and forced the closure of Rua Barão de Coromandel. As of September 7, Copasa reported that 80% of the repairs following the Barreiro rupture were complete. However, new infrastructure challenges emerged, including a pipe rupture in Contagem on the BR-040 highway. On September 9, Copasa issued a warning regarding potential water shortages or instability in the Barreiro region due to emergency maintenance.
