West Bengal assembly by-elections: Nandigram BJP victory

Overview

The Election Commission of India scheduled by-elections for the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies in West Bengal for October 6, with vote counting on October 9. Political volatility has increased due to the split of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) into the ‘Mamata All India Trinamool Congress’ and the Ritabrata Banerjee-led ‘Democratic Trinamool Congress’.

In Nandigram, tensions remained high following the arrest of Congress candidate Milan Pradhan. On October 4, the Election Commission ordered the immediate replacement of the Nandigram Police Station inspector-in-charge, Ajay Kumar Mishra, with Debasish Sarkar. Ahead of the vote, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari intensified campaigning, alleging that the previous TMC administration used police to file false cases against BJP leaders.

On October 6, voting commenced under heavy security, including 37 companies of Central Armed Police Forces. In Nandigram, the BJP fielded Hasirani Rath, while the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC faction supported the Congress candidate, Milan Pradhan, to strengthen the INDIA bloc. In Rejinagar, the AJUP fielded Ghulam Nabi Azad to contest against the BJP, TMC, Congress, and CPI(M).

Following the BJP's victory in Nandigram, Suvendu Adhikari cautioned party members against displaying ‘arrogance or pride’ after the win. He pledged to expedite local infrastructure projects, including railways, bridges, and medical services at the Nandigram Super Specialty Hospital, while maintaining his connection to the constituency as a voter.
