Digital and tech education push expands in Africa, India

Overview
June 2026: Egypt’s ITIDA launched a summer program training 10,000 university students in AI, cybersecurity and software development, aiming for 800,000 ICT workers by year‑end. Senegal began revising its curriculum for digital tools, and Morocco started the Nissaa’Gen Tech initiative for rural girls under Digital 2030.
Egypt’s Ministry of Higher Education upgraded 200 campuses with cloud‑computing, firewalls, e‑testing and accessibility services, and expanded digital services in university hospitals. In July the country presented the Egyptian Knowledge Bank at UNESCO’s Transforming Education Summit and inaugurated the Gateways Africa Forum with UNESCO, UNICEF and the ITU, emphasizing responsible AI.
Kenya, backed by the World Bank, equipped 10,000 public secondary schools with smart boards, laptops and 37,000 km of fibre‑optic cable. Morocco’s “Pioneer Schools” deployed AI‑based learning assistants.
Egypt opened 100 new applied‑technology schools, bringing its vocational network to 225 institutions. This expansion included a German‑Egyptian partnership to establish ten ISO‑accredited technical schools with dual‑track training starting 2026‑27; the agreement was signed in Berlin and will be implemented with Samcrete.
The Ministry also announced Egyptian‑Italian applied‑technology pharma and health schools across five campuses, offering practical training in drug manufacturing and healthcare in partnership with Italian institutes.
India’s MEIT launched the IndiaAI mission, a free AI fundamentals course for ten million learners, and expanded the J‑Guruji platform to 25,000 schools and 768,000 students. Mid‑July saw an AI Flash Course for the public and a three‑month legal‑profession certificate on prompt engineering and tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and GitHub Copilot.
These coordinated initiatives show a rapid scaling of digital and technical education across Africa and India, combining infrastructure upgrades, curriculum reform and international vocational partnerships.
