Vehicle theft spreads in Argentina, Spain, Mexico, Chile
Entities: Spanish National Police · Mendoza Police (Argentina) · Carabineros de Chile · Arwan Computación · Mexican Attorney General's Office
Overview
The coordinated wave of violent crime that began in June continues across Argentina, Mexico, Spain and Venezuela, now adding further vehicle‑theft and fraud incidents. In mid‑July Argentine police detained three minors who tried to rob two Turkish‑Argentine men during a counterfeit cryptocurrency transaction, seizing a replica pistol and phones. Security forces in Puebla, Mexico, pursued a vehicle‑sale fraud group, exchanged gunfire and arrested four suspects, confiscating a firearm. Spanish police intensified inspections of reduced‑mobility parking cards in Vila‑real and arrested a man in Torrelavega for a bar robbery and knife threat. Caracas authorities captured three members of the “Los Cerrajeros” burglary gang, seizing a vehicle, radios and phones, while raids in Vigo and Pontevedra recovered stolen clothing, phones and small quantities of drugs. Joint operations in Uruapan, Mexico, detained a priority target linked to an auto‑theft cell, confiscating a firearm and meth‑like substances. Police in Argentina and Spain warned of a surge in keyless vehicle thefts that exploit brief moments when drivers leave cars unlocked. In Ushuaia thieves move between parked cars, open doors without breaking locks and steal cash, documents and phones. Spanish police released a TikTok video describing a “planting” tactic in which a distractor drops coins near a wheel while an accomplice silently opens the passenger‑side door to steal items. Authorities urged owners to keep doors locked, windows up and door latches engaged. On 20 July, Argentine and Spanish officers reiterated these warnings, stressing the need to verify that vehicles are properly closed before stepping away. A week later, coordinated raids in Talavera (Spain) disrupted a “seed” distraction scheme at ATMs, while in Mendoza (Argentina) police seized about 300 kg of illegally obtained metal cables and arrested a man tied to a metal‑theft ring, also halting a cheque‑fraud operation targeting vehicle purchases.
