Asbestos contamination in European toy recalls
Overview
European authorities have issued recalls for various stretch-type toys containing sand contaminated with asbestos. In Germany, Woolworth GmbH initiated a nationwide recall of four products, including ‘Stretchy Sand’ and ‘Stretchy Mouse’, due to concerns that the sand may contain asbestos. This action followed reports of contaminated play sand originating from China that had previously been identified in Australia and New Zealand. Subsequently, the Italian Ministry of Health issued an urgent alert regarding a carrot-shaped elastic toy manufactured by Trendhaus (Model: 967176 / Batch: 2025 = CH33287 / Barcode: 4032722967176). This specific product, manufactured in China, was found to contain sand contaminated with tremolite, a dangerous form of asbestos. The European Safety Gate classified the risk as serious, noting that if the toy’s casing breaks, toxic fibers could be inhaled. Because distributors have not been clearly identified, officials suggest the product may have been sold through online platforms. In addition to the carrot-shaped item, the Provincial Health Agency (Asp) of Vibo Valentia issued a safety alert for another Trendhaus product identified as ‘Fun Sand Scented Blueberry’. This product, consisting of a printed plastic bag filled with sand, was also found to contain asbestos through the European Safety Gate rapid alert system. Authorities have warned that these toys may be present in private homes, nurseries, and schools. Consumers are advised to stop using the toys immediately and keep them out of reach of children. If a toy is intact, it should not be opened, cut, or emptied, and must be returned to the vendor or handled through local health authorities.
