Balkan aviation and tourism growth

Regional aviation and tourism in the Balkans are experiencing significant growth, with several major hubs reporting record-breaking summer performance.

Tuzla International Airport is nearing record passenger numbers, with approximately 52,000 passengers expected in August and a year-to-date total of roughly 420,000. Director Dževad Halilčević indicated that if current trends continue, the airport could see a record-breaking year, driven by high demand for routes to Memmingen, Dortmund, and Basel.

Tirana International Airport has also seen historic activity. Following a strong July with approximately 1.65 million passengers—a 28.1% increase over the previous year—the airport reached a single-day peak on August 17, 2026, handling 60,291 passengers and 326 flights. Prime Minister Edi Rama reported that as of August 27, the airport had processed 1.717 million passengers for the month. European aviation organizations have identified Tirana as having the “fastest monthly growth among large airports.”

Data released by Prime Minister Rama further indicates that Tirana International Airport recorded the highest number of passengers in the Balkan region during the first six months of 2026, processing approximately 6 million passengers. This represents a 17% increase compared to the same period in 2025, placing Tirana ahead of other regional hubs such as Belgrade (4.2 million), Zagreb (2.2 million), Pristina (2.1 million), Skopje (1.8 million), Split (1.3 million), and Dubrovnik (1.2 million).

In response to this expansion, Albania is working to align its national infrastructure with European standards. Plans aim for the main road network to meet these standards by 2030, with other segments following by 2040, including improvements to roads, railways, ports, and airports to ensure compliance with EU regulations.

Air Serbia also reported its busiest month on record in July, with monthly revenue exceeding 100 million euros for the first time, supported by a 10% growth in scheduled passenger numbers.
