Overview
Regional aviation and tourism in the Balkans continue to experience significant growth. Tirana International Airport remains a dominant player, having surpassed Serbia's Nikola Tesla Airport in passenger volume. Between January and August 2026, Skopje served 2,687,002 passengers, a 29.7% increase, while Ohrid Airport saw a 26.5% rise. Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski attributed this surge to a government subsidy policy per arriving passenger.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo International Airport reached new milestones, serving 1,783,597 passengers during the first nine months of 2026. Conversely, Banja Luka Airport reported an 11% decline in passenger traffic during the first eight months of 2026, totaling over 289,000 passengers. Despite this, acting director Valentina Kecman announced plans for a new 2,500-meter runway and a terminal capable of handling 2.5 million passengers annually.
