Balkans heating fuel price surge

Overview

In mid‑July 2026, heating fuel prices began climbing sharply across the Balkans. In Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), pellet prices jumped to 600–722 KM per tonne, while split firewood rose by about 20 KM per cubic metre. Serbia saw pellet costs rise by 2,000–4,000 dinars per tonne, reaching approximately 38,000–44,000 dinars. Suppliers blamed strong pre‑winter demand, higher production and fuel costs, and limited capacity. By mid-August, the situation in BiH intensified. Producers like Drvoprodex in Banja Luka reported being unable to accept new orders due to capacity constraints, with pellet prices reaching 760 KM per tonne. Raw material shortages pushed retail pellet prices as high as 830 KM per tonne by August 17. Goran Ivanović, President of the Association of Certified Pellet Producers in BiH, noted that production is being “immediately sold upon manufacture due to empty stocks.” By mid-September, the pellet market in BiH faced a crisis of rising retail costs and supply shortages. While producers reported lower average prices of 600 KM to 700 KM when buying directly, retail costs reached between 800 KM and 900 KM per ton in urban centers like Sarajevo and Mostar. Ivanović stated that producers have limited influence over retail traders, who may be capitalizing on consumer panic. The Federal Ministry of Trade reported price ranges from 500 KM to 895 KM per ton, prompting the Futura Consumer Association to investigate whether hikes are driven by input costs or unjustified margins. Beyond heating, BiH is experiencing broader upward pressure on living costs. Experts warn that diesel could exceed 4 KM per liter if global oil prices reach 110 USD per barrel. Additionally, the real estate market in Sarajevo has seen average prices for new apartments reach 4,304.6 KM per square meter, while rising rental prices continue to burden households.
