Chubut development under Governor Torres

Entities: Atlas GigaHub · Ignacio Torres · ENACOM · Trelew · Green Capital

Overview

In early June 2026 Governor Ignacio Torres handed over the final homes for families displaced by the El Hoyo forest fire and delivered school equipment in Esquel, marking the start of a wider social‑assistance drive. He shortly after launched the $640 billion “Plan Galina” infrastructure programme covering roads, housing, sanitation, sports and health, and announced a $4 billion ANSES pension payment, followed by the full rollout of a twelve‑installment pension fund settlement and a proposal to ease public‑employee credit‑card debt. Mid‑month he shifted to economic diversification, meeting Rawson and Mar del Plata mayors to start a joint fisheries agenda that includes reviving the Comodoro Rivadavia shipyard and expanding marine processing. Later, Torres inaugurated a provincial Police Cadet School, a monitoring centre with facial‑recognition cameras and the first police‑housing scheme, bolstering public‑security capacity. A $12 billion investment package for Sarmiento was unveiled, upgrading water, power, health and housing infrastructure; a new transformer station and the recategorisation of Sarmiento Hospital were detailed on 21 June, alongside coordinated water‑security and winter‑assistance projects in Río Negro, Buenos Aires and Santa Cruz. In June, Torres led talks on the Futaleufú hydroelectric concession, demanding higher royalties and naming a state prosecutor for energy negotiations. Early July, the Union of Assemblies of Communities of Chubut condemned a YPF agreement that transferred responsibility for more than 3,000 inactive wells and related environmental liabilities to the province while granting YPF a $25 million payment for unspecified projects, calling the deal illegal and non‑consultative. At the same time, the Chamber of Commerce of Comodoro Rivadavia and Rada Tilly rejected a proposed 28 % electricity tariff hike for non‑residential users, warning of severe impacts on local businesses and urging a phased, technically justified implementation.
