Czech MP Filip Turek faces criminal probes

Overview

The July 13 collision in central Prague, in which MP Filip Turek’s Mercedes struck a hospital ambulance, has progressed from a traffic inquiry to a criminal investigation for negligent bodily injury. Turek, the government’s climate‑policy envoy, has suspended that role and says he will not invoke parliamentary immunity if police request his surrender. Police continue to analyse camera footage and have ordered an expert forensic assessment.

On 5 August 2026 the state prosecutor formally opened criminal proceedings, confirming the investigation remains non‑public and no charges have been filed yet. Two days later, police concluded that a series of Turek’s social‑media posts from 2010‑2017 constitute criminal offences such as hate speech, public endorsement of murder and a Nazi salute. Because the alleged acts are time‑barred, prosecutors cannot bring charges, and Turek argues that only the courts can determine guilt.

European Parliament member Tomáš Zdechovský publicly condemned Turek, calling his party “human waste.” The MP maintains that he entered the intersection on a green light, that the road markings were unclear, and that he will resign from the envoy post if responsibility is proven.

The investigation remains ongoing, with expert reports pending and no individual yet charged.
