71st Festa do Peão de Barretos concludes amid tension

Overview

The 71st Festa do Peão de Barretos concluded as a major economic driver for the sertanejo tradition. While initial estimates suggested R$ 600 million in revenue for the State of São Paulo, updated data from the Centro de Inteligência da Economia do Turismo (CIET) indicates the event generated R$ 742 million in direct financial movement.

Held between August 20 and 30, 2026, the festival attracted approximately 1 million people, with 84% identified as tourists or excursionists. Visitors arrived from all 26 Brazilian states and the Federal District, as well as from the United States and Mexico. The largest groups of tourists originated from Minas Gerais (13.8%), Paraná (8.7%), and Goiás (6.1%). On average, visitors stayed for five days with a daily expenditure of R$ 816 per person.

In a notable human-interest story, Cleberson Brito, known as ‘Zé da Bota’, arrived at the festival after a seven-month journey on mule. Brito had joined the ‘Berranteiro das Américas’ expedition in Acre, which evolved into a long-distance trek to reach Barretos.

Despite the economic success, the event faced logistical challenges, including electrical overloads and camping capacity issues. The festival was also marked by political friction, including insults directed at President Luiz Inácio da Silva during Gusttavo Lima’s performance, and celebrity controversies involving singer Ana Castela. Regarding public safety, the 33rd Military Police Battalion reported thefts of mobile phones and wallets, but confirmed there were no homicides or fatalities during the period.
