71st Festa do Peão de Barretos begins with tech and tension

Overview

The 71st Festa do Peão de Barretos has commenced at the Parque do Peão in Barretos, Brazil. Organized by Clube Os Independentes, the 11-day event, running through August 30, is expected to draw approximately 1 million visitors. To manage the 2 million square meter complex, organizers have implemented facial biometrics and automatic license plate recognition. Security is supported by 2,000 São Paulo Military Police agents, drones, and K9 units. Logistical preparations include free shuttle buses and modernization at Barretos Airport. Managed by ASP – Aeroportos Paulistas, the airport has undergone R$ 15 million in upgrades, including a 50% expansion of the passenger terminal and new inspection infrastructure. Between August 20 and August 30, the airport projects approximately 1,180 passengers and 350 flight operations, including commercial flights by Azul Conecta. The festival has become a significant site of political tension and celebrity controversy. During a live TV Globo broadcast of singer Gusttavo Lima, the audience was recorded chanting insults against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The event’s political atmosphere was further underscored by speeches from Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, reflecting the festival's alignment with the agribusiness sector. Social media conflict intensified following a photograph of singer Ana Castela posing with Federal Deputy Nikolas Ferreira. Both individuals used hand gestures forming the number 22, a symbol of the Liberal Party (PL). This led to a public rift where singer Pabllo Vittar unfollowed Castela, who then unfollowed Vittar in response. Vittar later made social media comments referencing the “L” gesture associated with supporters of President Lula, which many interpreted as a provocation. Public figures such as actress Luana Piovani also criticized the singer’s perceived political alignment.
