France World Cup 2026 Cherki–Deschamps fallout
Overview
France’s 0‑2 semi‑final loss to Spain in Arlington, Texas, ended a run of six straight victories and extinguished hopes of a third consecutive World Cup final. Spanish striker Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot and Pedro Porro added a second. Captain Kylian Mbappé called the defeat a “huge disappointment,” while midfielder Rayan Cherki, after walking out of the mixed‑zone interview, said France “lost to ourselves, not to the referee or Spain.” Midfielder Michael Olise echoed the view that the team failed to execute its tactical plan and lacked intensity. Spanish captain Rodri praised his side’s control and looked ahead to a final against Argentina or England.
The loss sparked unrest across France on the national holiday of July 14. Police reported disturbances in 183 cities, with major clashes in Paris and Lyon. A total of 342 arrests were made, 250 of whom were placed in custody. Emergency services faced 688 firework‑related incidents, and authorities seized 1,128 illegal firecrackers. Property damage included 701 vehicles set alight nationwide, and in Grenoble a 49‑year‑old spectator was pursued and shot dead in a gang‑linked dispute. The interior ministry said the situation remained largely under control.
Coach Didier Deschamps, already critical of referee Ivan Barton, lamented the team being “a level below” Spain and expressed concern over William Saliba’s injury. He pledged to regroup for the third‑place match, while the public debate over selection, officiating and on‑field performance continues to dominate the national conversation.
