2026 Hope for Democracy internal turmoil
Entities: Maria Karystianou · Hope for Democracy · Thanasis Avgérinos · Thanasios Avgerinos · Thanasis Avgyrinos
Overview
Late June 2026 saw the first high‑profile exits from Maria Karystianou’s nascent movement. Technical advisor Vasilis Kokotakis and retired colonel Athanasios Papanikolaou quit, denouncing a lack of collective democratic procedures and a vague policy line. Their departures were followed by former athlete‑coach Kostas Vambakas and two Crete members, Achilleas Rompogianakis and Angeliki Lenakaki, who also cited a mismatch with the leadership. Karystianou defended the initiative, branding the criticisms as premature, launched an official website, opened member registrations and promised transparent, citizen‑driven statutes. On 25‑27 June she used social media to accuse a “few dishonest” insiders of extortion, candidate‑buying and underground ballot formation, announcing a “cleaning” and a change of form for ELpida. In July the movement continued to grapple with resignations, presented a near‑final programme in Kalamata and, on 31 July, expelled former spokesperson Thanasis Avgerinos after his resignation and accusations of a parallel press office. The expulsion was reiterated on 2 August when Avgerinos posted a literary quotation; Karystianou again called his statements divisive and a breach of the party’s non‑cooperation principle. In early July anti‑foreclosure activist Othōnas Iakovidis resigned, saying Karystianou’s purchase of an apartment at a foreclosure auction violated the party’s core principles. On 18 July Karystianou held a press conference in Kalamata, announcing that the programme was near completion, pledging measures against inflation and wage‑price gaps, and ruling out any coalition with New Democracy or the party of former prime minister Alexis Tsipras while hinting at elections in September‑October. A week later, after Avgerinos’ expulsion, actress Kateryna Moutsatsou, psychologist Maria Ioannidou and union leader Takis Kotsorgios also left, criticizing internal management while reaffirming commitment to democratic ideals. The cumulative exits deepened the internal crisis and raised doubts about the movement’s cohesion.
