Internal crisis deepens in Hope for Democracy movement
Overview
The internal turmoil of Maria Karystianou’s Hope for Democracy movement—also referred to as Elpida gia ti Dimokratia—intensified in August 2026 following a wave of mass resignations. Approximately 22 members, including former spokesperson Thanasis Avgerinos, Katerina Moutsatsou, Giannis Chatzistoyannis, Maria Ioannidou, and Takis Kotsorgios, have departed. The exiting members issued a joint statement characterizing their exit as a ‘principle stance’ rather than a pursuit of positions, asserting that ‘the resignation is not a lack of character. It is a right and, when needed, a stance of principle.’ Departing officials have accused the leadership, specifically Maria Gratsia and Nikos Galanos, of creating a ‘small, fearful, authoritarian party’ through centralized decision-making and a lack of transparency. Katerina Moutsatsou has specifically defended her tenure against claims that her contributions were non-existent, stating she developed two comprehensive programmatic proposals for the culture and cultural heritage sectors during her two-month term. Karystianou has dismissed these claims, characterizing the departures as ‘extortion’ or ‘blackmail’ and suggesting they are driven by individuals with ulterior motives. She has alleged an organized attempt by certain individuals to seize control and dismantle the organization, claiming to possess evidence of such efforts. She also accused a former member of soliciting funds under the guise of contributing to the movement. In late August, Karystianou expanded her allegations, claiming the movement has been a victim of ‘intellectual theft,’ asserting that elements of her founding declaration were ‘copy-pasted’ into the founding declaration of Alexis Tsipras’s political entity. She also accused a former official in Thessaloniki of soliciting 20 euro payments from citizens under her name for political gatherings. Following these tensions, Thanasis Avgerinos refuted Karystianou’s allegations of a ‘coup attempt,’ questioning the logic of such claims given he was entrusted with presenting the movement’s founding declaration.
