Honduran migrant caravans toward the United States

Overview

Migrant caravans from Honduras continue to move toward the United States through Mexico. In mid-October 2026, a group known as ‘Fe y Esperanza con Dios’, comprising roughly 350 people primarily from Central America, traveled through Chiapas toward Oaxaca. The group’s progress was hindered by heavy rainfall and extreme weather, leading to health issues among some members, including minors.

Newer movements have seen larger groups depart from San Pedro Sula, with some caravans ranging from 300 to over 1,500 people traveling by bus or on foot toward the Guatemalan borders of Corinto and Agua Caliente. A separate group, self-named the ‘Sin Fronteras’ caravan, consisting of approximately 200 to 500 individuals, has entered Mexico via the Rodolfo Robles international bridge in Suchiate. This group, composed mainly of people from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, has begun traveling through Chiapas toward central Mexico. Local authorities and Civil Protection paramedics have provided medical assistance in Tapachula, including vaccinations and malaria detection tests.

By late October, a caravan of several hundred migrants—including nationals from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Haiti, Venezuela, and Cuba—was reported traveling on foot through southern Mexico. Some participants expressed hope that both Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and U.S. President Donald Trump would facilitate their passage to secure employment. Additionally, some members indicated an intention to position themselves near the U.S.-Mexico border during the midterm election cycle, suggesting a hope that a Democratic victory might lead to more lenient border policies.

These departures are driven by poverty, hunger, and lack of employment. The movement has triggered political friction in Honduras, with the National Party accusing the ruling Libre party of orchestrating the exodus. Concurrently, the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa has warned that participating in caravans does not guarantee entry and that the border remains closed to illegal immigration.
