International automotive events and tourism in Mexico
Overview
Mexico continues to host significant international automotive and tourism events. In late September 2026, the inaugural Rally de las Haciendas took place in Mérida, covering 713 kilometers across Yucatán and Campeche. This regularity rally featured high-performance vehicles from brands such as Ferrari, McLaren, and Porsche, aiming to promote regional heritage through visits to historical henequen haciendas.
The 39th edition of La Carrera Panamericana commenced on October 16 in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, following a legacy tour and classic car exhibition. The 4,000-kilometer race included a two-day route through Veracruz on October 16 and 17, passing through Coatzacoalcos, the port of Veracruz, and Xalapa. Tourism officials expected the event to significantly impact hotel occupancy, with approximately 50,000 attendees anticipated.
Following its passage through Guanajuato, where French competitors Hilarie and Laura Damiron led the classification in a 1954 Studebaker Comander, the rally concluded in Zacatecas. The seventh and final stage featured high-speed sections through San Luis Potosí, with some vehicles exceeding 250 kilometers per hour. The competition finished in the historic center of Zacatecas near the Basilica Cathedral, drawing thousands of spectators and serving as a major driver for regional tourism.
Previously, the rally in Puebla was expected to generate 8 million pesos in economic impact, while the Veracruz route faced challenging weather. In Veracruz, the 16th Antique Car Exhibition in Xalapa and the third Jalapeño Chili Festival supported local interests. Looking ahead, the Veracruz Ministry of Culture has announced free Day of the Dead celebrations from October 27 to November 2.
