Electrolux Italy layoffs dispute escalates

Overview

Since May 2026 the conflict over Electrolux’s restructuring plan has widened. Minister Adolfo Urso and regional presidents from Marche, Emilia‑Romagna, Veneto, Friuli‑Venezia Giulia and Lombardy publicly condemned the proposed shutdown of the Cerreto d’Esi plant and demanded an immediate withdrawal and a new industrial strategy. The Friuli‑Venezia Giulia government and a coalition of Pordenone mayors echoed the call, urging joint dialogue and concrete investment to protect thousands of jobs. On 25 May the government issued an ultimatum, setting a 15 June deadline for Electrolux to retract the plan that would cut about 1,700 jobs and close Cerreto d’Esi. The company defended the move as a response to soaring energy, steel and labour costs. A regional council motion on 11 June urged Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to intervene in the Porcia restructuring, while ministerial talks on 15 June resulted in a 50‑day suspension of all layoffs and closures. Unions welcomed the pause and the company pledged to negotiate a revised proposal. The first technical meeting on 24 June stalled, with unions reporting no meaningful concessions and warning that the future of Porcia, Susegana, Forlì, Solaro and Cerreto d’Esi remained uncertain. On 30 June workers at the Forlì plant stopped several lines over heat and reduced‑hour demands, and a strike‑style sit‑in was organised at Porcia. In mid‑July unions clashed with the Ministry of Enterprises, rejecting the 1,700‑job cut plan and demanding a revised industrial proposal that addresses energy costs, productivity and the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. The same day a public assembly at Porcia reiterated the 2022 agreement on laundry‑product lines and political proposals for plant specialization.
