Konya and Kars youth and cultural initiatives

Overview

In early June 2024, Karatay municipality began free summer workshops for children and teenagers in arts, robotics, languages, and sports. Two weeks later, a traffic-safety training for over 8,000 primary-school pupils was held with police, gendarmerie, and the education directorate, featuring classroom lessons, an electric-vehicle course, and a “Nature School” of environmental activities. In early July, the Konya Metropolitan Mayor launched the “Güle Oynaya Camiye Gel” programme, rewarding 2017-born children who attend 40 consecutive morning prayers with bicycles. On 12 July, Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay opened the first Konya Culture Days at Kültürpark, showcasing crafts, cuisine, and traditions from all 31 districts under the theme “Sazımda Söz Var” to reconnect residents, especially children, with the city’s heritage. Mid-July, the Albayrak Group opened the 2024 “Hâne” Islamic Arts exhibition at the restored Tantavi Cultural and Art Center, displaying calligraphic hats, tezhip ornaments, digital works, illuminated kandils, and ceramics around the theme of family and home; officials including Governor İbrahim Akın and Mayor Altay attended. The exhibition runs through early August. On 26 July 2026, Karatay held the 10th straight flat bicycle race, a 1.4-km course linking the Accessible Life Park and Active Living Centre for people with disabilities, drawing hundreds of youths aged 6–14, with medals, cash prizes, and comprehensive safety measures attended by local officials. In August 2026, Karatay hosted its 11th traditional flat bicycle race, with approximately 500 young athletes competing across 1.4 and 2.8 km routes.
