La Bella Luz sexual harassment investigation
Overview
In June 2026, former La Bella Luz vocalist Naldy Saldaña filed a criminal complaint alleging indecent assault and sexual harassment by the orchestra’s musical director César Sánchez Chavesta during a rehearsal. Video excerpts supplied to police were broadcast on Magaly TV La Firme, prompting the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Violence against Women to open a preliminary investigation.
The orchestra placed Sánchez on indefinite suspension on 4 August. Two days later, owner Óscar Custodio publicly apologized, announced Sánchez’s permanent removal, and transferred full administration of La Bella Luz to his son Óscar Junior Custodio. Former members, including singer Claudia Salazar, released WhatsApp chats they say document Sánchez’s repeated harassment.
Legal proceedings have expanded to include scrutiny of other group members. Saldaña’s attorney, Israel Castillo, stated the defense possesses chat logs that may contradict testimonies from certain members who denied knowledge of the harassment. The defense intends to present these messages to the Public Ministry to show Saldaña had informed colleagues of the incidents, warning that vocalists could face repercussions for cover-ups and owner Óscar Custodio could face criminal charges for assisting in concealment.
As of mid-August, Sánchez Chavesta has appeared before authorities at the Depincri in San Juan de Lurigancho to provide a four-hour testimony. Following his testimony, he was reportedly confronted by members of the public at a shopping center. Sánchez’s legal representatives are now demanding a full review of all rehearsal video evidence, arguing that only a fragment has been presented and the entire recording must be analyzed for context. Meanwhile, Saldaña expressed a desire for the group to continue their careers but noted she intends to eventually ask members why they failed to act when she initially requested assistance.
